Whether it’s from a burst pipe or a heavy storm, water damage can be stressful. Water damage restoration may feel overwhelming, and returning your home to its water-free state may feel impossible. While it feels challenging now, following a few simple steps will help you stay safe and start in the right direction toward restoration.

Safety First
Always stay out of the water. If the water is coming from an unknown source or isn’t clean water, like from a backing-up toilet or flood water full of dirt and debris, it can carry dangerous chemicals and bacteria.
Even if the water does come from a clean source, it still carries the risk of electric shock if any plugs or exposed wires are covered by the water. This is why you also shouldn’t try to use any electrical appliances or turn on any lights in your home, at least until the restoration crew has given you the go-ahead.
In other words, step one of your water damage restoration journey is staying safe and out of the water.
Evidence for Insurance
If your insurance policy covers flood or water damage, some or even all your water damage restoration bills may be paid for by your provider. However, this will only be the case if you provide proper documentation, starting with a good “before” picture of the damaged area. So before your water damage restoration crew can get started, make sure you take plenty of photos of the damage.
