Covered Porch Construction in Plano, TX
Covered porches and screened porches engineered with proper footings, load-bearing columns, and roof tie-ins, built as structural additions to the home, not cosmetic add-ons.
A Porch Is a Structural Addition
A covered porch is a structural addition to the home. It has its own foundation, its own load-bearing columns or posts, and a roof that must be tied into the existing roof structure so the whole assembly resolves wind and gravity loads together. A porch built without engineered footings will heave on North Texas clay; a porch roof tied in without proper flashing will leak at the connection. We build porches as structural projects, permitted and inspected by the City of Plano.
Footings, Columns & Load Transfer
Porch columns carry the roof load down to footings. We size the footing diameter and depth to the tributary load and the soil bearing capacity, set them below the active clay zone, and anchor the columns with galvanized hardware that keeps wood off concrete. For screened porches, the framing must also carry the screen wall loads and any ceiling finishes.
- Footing depth and diameter sized to column tributary load
- Galvanized post bases with stand-off to prevent wood rot
- Columns sized to carry roof load plus any future ceiling or screen wall
- Lateral bracing so the porch frame resists wind racking
Roof Tie-In & Flashing
The porch roof must tie into the existing roof with proper step flashing, kick-out flashing where the roof meets a vertical wall, and a continuous underlayment tie-in. We cut into the existing roof, integrate the new roof, and flash every penetration so the connection does not become a leak source. The framing inspection and the final inspection both pass before we call the porch done.
