Structural Deck Construction in Plano, TX
Elevated and ground-level decks engineered with proper footings, load-rated framing, and code-compliant ledger connections, built to carry people, not just look good.
A Deck Is a Load-Bearing Structure
A residential deck is one of the most failure-prone structures in residential construction, and almost every failure traces back to the same causes: undersized footings, improper ledger bolting, missing lateral load ties, and guardrail posts that are not structural. We build decks as engineered structures. The live load requirement (typically 40 psf for residential decks), the soil bearing capacity, and the connection details are all specified before the first post is set.
Engineered Footings on Expansive Clay
Deck footings in Plano must extend below the active clay zone or they will heave and lift the framing. We size the footing diameter and depth to the soil report and the tributary load of each post, corner posts, interior posts, and stair posts all carry different loads. We pour concrete footings with proper bell-bottoms where required, set post anchors, and schedule the inspection before any framing goes up.
- Footing depth set below the active clay zone from the geotechnical report
- Diameter sized to tributary load and soil bearing capacity
- Galvanized post anchors with stand-off to keep wood off concrete
- Drainage graded so water does not pool at the footing
Ledger Connection & Lateral Load Paths
The ledger board, where the deck attaches to the house, is the single most common point of catastrophic failure. We bolt the ledger through the house rim joist with properly sized lag or through-bolts, never just screws, and we install lateral load ties (hold-down tension devices) that tie the deck framing into the house floor diaphragm. This is the detail that separates a deck that survives a gathering from one that collapses under one.
Guardrails, Stairs & Code Compliance
Any deck more than 30 inches above grade requires a code-compliant guardrail at minimum 36 inches high, with infill that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass. Guardrail posts must be structural, bolted to the rim joist with proper blocking, not surface-mounted with fasteners. Stairs require consistent riser heights, proper stringer spans, and a graspable handrail. We frame and inspect every one of these details to the City of Plano residential building code.
